We stayed in Village Heights Golf Resort in Crete August 09. Crete is made up of 4 cities Iraklion, Lasithi, Rethimnon and Hania. It is advisable to have a car when visiting Crete as it gives you the freedom to explore various mountain villages.
On our first day we visited The Palace of Knossos which is 5km south of Iraklion. It is the largest Minoan palaces. For a couple of Euros you could have a guided tour about the Palace telling you about the histories, myths, legends, etc. Outside are souvenirs shops and tavernas. You could get a decent souvenir of Minoan culture. The tavernas are a bit touristy and pricey. We went to Rodhia for lunch, a sizeable village overlooking the city. The tradional Greek food was great.

Second day was a visit to the Port and Venetian harbour area of Iraklion. They have really nice markets, restaurants and shops. For dinner we explored the nearby village in our hotel Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonisos.
On our Third day we went to Spinalonga in Lasithi, which was used as a leper colony.

Fourth day we went to Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest gorge and a must see and do in Crete. The gorge hike is 18km long with the final 2km reaching the sea from the mouth of the gorge. It took us 6 hours but it was totally worth it.
On the Fifth day on our way to Hania, we visited the Monastery of Arkadhi in Rethimnon. It was one of the richest monasteries in Crete and a well known stop-over for travelers. We carried on to Hania which is the Western most province of Crete. Comparing to Iraklion, this has less tourist and a different atmosphere with quaint restaurants, shops and more chilled out.
